ABOUT THIS PAGE

This is the page of models, or specific examples of vernacular types. Although the name might generate some confusion with the idea of scale-model or maquette, I will call these examples "models" until finding a better term (some people would call them "typological versions," but it sounds too complicated for an online project).
The idea of "model" is related to that of "type." Type would be a building structure whose characteristics remain more or less constant, accross different models. Model would be one out of many variations or interpretations of the type rules. As a way of example, the scheme shown represents different models of turreted houses, which belong to the same Victorian type.

Drexel Institute Building
United States

Description
Image of this model
Designed by the Wilson brothers, notable designers of the 19th century, and built in 1891. It was the original campus of Drexel University, then called Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Technology.

This building features a richly decorated skin, covering a quite rational structure; a mix between Beaux-Arts classicism (that would become popular with the Columbian exposition two years after this building's completion), and the Modern style, which was also beginning to take form in this time.

Location USA - Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, Corner of Chestnut St and 32nd St.
