A trip to Colombia - 2. What country am I visiting?
A second introductory post about a summer trip to Colombia. The first one was a disclaimer; this one intends to be a general context for soon-to-come entries "from the field."

A trip to Colombia - 1. The visit
The dreams about Colombia are back. I dreamt every night about the country during the first two years in the States, and always thought that was concerning. It was like if my unconscious mind rejected the fact that I was not there anymore. The dreams were about entangled forests in shiny and dark green tones; beautiful rivers, as clear as loud and fierce; oddly shaped mountains and roads with thousand curves, following them obediently. Me, going from village to village in old buses, just like it was when I as a kid traveled with my father...

Web-citing
The new MISTI website has launched. MISTI is MIT's International Science and Technology Initiative. I designed their website as one of my student jobs last spring, and didn't get to finish it before graduating. MIT Web Communications Services took on the job and finished it following the design, which they didn't have to. It feels nice when your work is acknowledged like that.
Another of my MIT era websites (still online) is Professor Andrew Scott, RIBA portfolio. Working with Andrew was a nice experience too. He wanted a very simple website, but that simplicity demanded some technical trickery combining Flash and HTML.
The third one of my born-at-MIT websites is Ethnoarch.com, this one you are visiting.

Ethnoarch Design - Technical update

Models! (I mean, architectural models)
Today I am officially launching the "Models" section of Ethnoarch (the Models homepage explains what exactly "models" is). The section is up and working, although only three models are initially listed. Those were the ones I used to test the work. Besides, they are actually three of my "fixations" these days: Cira Centre, Convention Hall and Drexel University campus. The three of them will be looping for a few days as the only content, while I feed the database with new ones. Before that, however, I will work on re-building the "Articles" and "News" sections. I expect to have all of the site sections working by the third week of May, which is when I will head down South, to Colombia for a few weeks.

Pelli’s follow-up and more
Uploaded 31 photographs that I had also shot during the Convention Hall picture taking session. These are mostly Cesar Pelli's Cira Centre in process, and some shots at Saint Patrick's Parade. I didn't have time to upload these before traveling to San Francisco (did well in the presentation, by the way).

Design - Technical update
|
|
Site ready to go…
As of March 28 2005, Ethnophotography.com is basically operational. There is a main menu listing the pictures with small thumbnails. These thumbnails pop up 400 px versions of the images. There is a link under the description of those enlarged images that provides detailed information on each of them. I have also set up an order form to sell reproduction rights over some of the pictures, in order to be able cover operational costs of the Web site.
The next steps will be to set up a home page, and then to provide visitors a way to browse the collection by using different options, such as author, shoot date, etc. In this moment, however, I am going to stop for a few weeks, since I need to take care of Ethnoarch (but I will continue uploading new pictures). The idea there is to bring back to life the news and articles database, and start adding new information.

A Requiem for the Hall
A note about the demolition of the Convention Hall, the historic Art Deco piece in Philadelphia.
And here is an update six months after.

Ethnoarch Design - Technical update

Re-opening the doors
Re-created the old templates and re-directed them to this section, the only one that is currently up. From now on visitors coming from search engines will at least find some content beyond 404 pages. I think this is the last thing I will do to the website before going to San Francisco (I will finally be at the AIGP conference). The only one additional update will be Ethnophotography.com work. I will finish a 2nd round of corrections to the templates, and then I will add some pictures of the Convention Hall. After that, I will have to focus on my conference paper. Will go back to this after the conference.

Some personal pictures
Uploaded 33 personal pictures, so visitors have a grasp on who I am, how does my family look like and what do I do for a living. The work descriptions may look incomplete, since they don't explain the broad context of the projects. I am going to leave it like that for now. There are many pictures of the projects and I expect that, through the captions, the projects will be fully explained. Since uploading all of the pictures may take a long time, you are always invited to contact me if you want to know more about any of the projects. Besides, there is always an 'About' page, for the very broad context of what I do.
In the future, all of the personal pictures will appear on a separate section of the Web site. You can access the contents of that section right now by clicking here. All of today's 33 are already there.
In other personal matters these days, struggling with dad's health problems (it is much harder to take when you live on the other side of the ocean), and working on UPenn's UNI new website design.

New Voices revised abstract
Sent the revised abstract and bio to the New Voices conference. Will post it here soon.
I have posted it on March 15, 2005 (under the "read more" link at the right). I might not go to this conference, however. Last night I received even better news with the acceptance letter to Berkeley's PhD program. This conference is a perfect opportunity to show this work and get feedback from just the right people, but I should better save the airplane ticket for the program's information session two weeks after...
